JOON

In Farsi, the word “joon” translates to life, and is often used as a term of endearment. It carries a positive connotation of closeness and affection, bestowed upon one's beloved. ⁣A deeply personal studio project, JOON is a magazine filled with stories that explore the creative culture of a city we love so much, Portland. ⁣The magazine was conceived as a platform for compelling stories, elevating the voices of some of the city’s most important figures—celebrating, especially, BIPOC voices. However, more than a storytelling platform, JOON is a testament to the investment we make in our community.

JOON is a self-initiated project, which allows us to collaborate with people we believe in across art direction, photography, and writing. For our inaugural issue, our editorial team curated all features, focusing on experts and tastemakers from all levels of talent in a process that took nearly six months. The result, a 159-page book, celebrates Portland with profiles on the people, places, and things that make it special. 

Produced in partnership with Brown Printing, Inc.—one of the city’s oldest printers still in operation today—JOON is a visual and tactile artifact. Each feature reflects the subject matter utilizing various spot colors, papers, and coating. Typeface, color, and layout styles change throughout the entire magazine, showcasing our graphic design capabilities paired with Brown’s premium print production techniques.
