By Juan Karlo Muro

Juan Karlo Muro is a graphic designer based in Fresno, CA. After graduating from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, Karlo founded Studio Mala—a collaborative design practice. Common People is an exhibition of Risograph prints about the people of Chichen Itza made by Karlo during 2019–2020.

The prints started as an attempt to document and break his everyday routine. As a Mexican-American designer who was mostly taught through an Eurocentric design lens, he wanted to explore beyond those parameters. He decided to step away from typography to explore forms, texture and colors. This process made him examine himself and his culture.

During a family trip through burial grounds in Chichen Itza, his tour guide said, “beautiful colors engulfed the towering monuments of wealthy homes and their possessions.” As the tour guide continued to explain the engraved skeleton heads, Muro began to document them. The expressions of the heads made him wonder about the people. He started to imagine their traditions and their everyday lives. In Common People, Muro uses color to bring life back to these common everyday individuals — usually, forgotten. Muro attempts to give these individuals the same treatment the wealthy got for their monuments. Each head is named after someone in his life who continues to inspire him.
